Ok, as you can see there are some graphics changes to the site, now each menu item has its own picture. But as I was going through the China pages, I realised how little I have written about my travels in China. This scarcity of writing is in contrast to how much fun I had, the amount of traveling I did and the number of friends I made while there.

Well, I would like to post some pictures but sadly, I don’t have those pictures with me right now. There are too many to sort through anyway. All this recalling of China has been triggered by watching ????????????, a Taiwanese coming of age movie filled with bittersweet memories of youth. It really takes you back to those times when you had your life ahead of you, the potential to do whatever you wanted, and when the smallest things were so important. It gives a sense of what if…no matter how happy we are now, there is always a sense of nostalgic longing about the road not taken. Definitely worth watching.

So in a blast from the past, I have decided to play Duke Nukem Forever.

The classic Duke Nukem 3D was and still is one of my favourite games ever. I remember it well, in 1996, playing PC multiplayer for the first time on Duke 3D. The way to do it in those days was to meet someone on a local BBS, then exchange phone numbers and dial in on modem. Then hope that somehow you can connect. There was no fancy “voice” chat in those days, and the thing was basically a 1 on 1 affair. I remember the first real joy in playing against, and with, another human, totally different to just killing computer opponents, and using fun ways to kill such as pipe bombs and trip mines. The other thing was the first time I played against someone it was a girl. Those were the days when you had to call their number to speak to them before launching a game just to make sure settings were correct, and I definitely talked to a girl. She was a good player.

What about the new Duke? Everyone knows this game has been 15 years in development, 12 years behind schedule, a byword for vapourware, a punchline for jokes and the initials DNF started to mean something else. Well it’s finally taken another studio to push it out after 3D Realms went bust before finishing it. There are a lot of reviews out for it already, and most of them are quite reasonable in their assessments. Here are my thoughts on the game:

  • Crude humour is back. This is a trademark of the Duke series and quite possibly one of the things I liked the most from Duke 3D, so I am glad for its return. Especially since most shooters are way too serious these days. Pissing, drinking beer, and various other interactive objects make a welcome return.
  • The ladies are back, and so is the macho humour, dirty puns.
    Make out

    Special place

    Yes she will
A lot has been written about how the depiction of women in this game is outdated and misogynistic. People are forgetting that Duke 3D had strippers who you could tip money to see very pixellated breasts, and who you could kill if you wanted to. At least in this game, the normal non-infected women are not killable, and yes I tried. I don’t see anything wrong with that since they are just pixels, and they get in the way of doors a lot. The macho humour in here is just that, humour. What do people expect from a Duke game anyway, it’s not going to be all politically correct. Granted I have not yet played up to the Hive level where apparently you do need to kill a couple of women infected with alien offspring but so far, nothing in this game deserves as much as scorn as it has received as a woman hating title. In fact it is pretty tame so far, with only cheesy puns being something that could be construed as misogynistic. I mean there is no nudity unlike Duke 3D and there are no killable women, until the Hive level where the two women to be killed are infected.

  • Improved graphics. Well after 15 years of development, you’d expect it to look at least a little better.
    Effects
  • Unbelievably long loading times. I mean it’s gotten to a point of real annoyance. I don’t mind too much a long level load although of course, the shorter the better, but even after the level is loaded, each death requires reloading the whole level again. I compare it to Modern Warfare 3 where yeah the level loads were a bit sluggish on my laptop but each respawn at the most recent checkpoint after a death on the same level is instantaneous. It really is frustrating having to wait a long time in between respawns.
  • 2 weapon limit. What the fuck is this design choice? Duke is all about carnage on a massive level with a range of weapons. Who thought of this dumb 2 weapon limit crap? It’s acceptable in the more realistic shooters with good cover but Duke is all about strafing and fast gameplay, fighting enemies in gungho style. Hate this design choice and I know apparently they’ve since patched it to allow for 4 weapons but this is just stupid, pretty much kills a lot of the old Duke fun.
  • Slow game play and no exploration. So the above loading times, and 2 weapon limit along with a regenerating health bar means that the gameplay is much slower. I spent most of the time running away waiting for my shitty health bar to regnerate. Give me med packs anytime. Also the maps are linear corridors. It’s not possible to make a wrong turn or to get lost. No exploration needed. That’s not Duke either.

It’s very late and in conclusion I just like to say that this extremely late game is not the same type of game that I had wanted. It tries mixing and matching different styles of shooters and it just doesn’t work. I’ll still play it because some of the game is still Duke like, but if it wasn’t for the special place Duke holds in my memories, I wouldn’t bother. It’s not a bad game, but there are so many games better than it. I am glad it’s released and hopefully more Duke games will be made after this, as apparently this was still a financial success. With any sequel Duke games, perhaps it will return to the spirit of what made Duke 3D one of the most fun games I’ve ever played.

So after using up a shitload of Lavaspot (Wi-Max) credits, I have finally finished downloading a few hundred megabytes of patches for Starcraft2 which was required for me to login into Battlenet with it. That login finally allowed me to authenticate the game so I can play in OFFLINE mode. This right here is what’s wrong with DRM. I bought the game legitimately but have not been able to play it on my laptop in Samoa until now. A big Fuck off to you Blizzard.

I wanted to fire up my Starcraft2 game last night to play it. But NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! the game wouldn’t start because I needed to connect to the internet to verify my copy. WTF?!!!! You know why I wanted offline single player mode Blizzard? Because I don’t have an internet connection. Sigh!

So I played a round of Legion TD with that Nature race and I was shit. Haven’t played it for so long. Only got up to level 18 or 19.

I just got back from watching Harry Potter 7: Deathly Hallows part 2.

It was great.

This was the culmination of about 15 years of Potter books and films. The battle scene is pretty epic and I didn’t feel that it was long at all given its 2+hrs running time. I could have kept on watching. The story was resolved like the book of course, with sexual tension released, the quest finished, and destinies fulfilled. It really brought back a lot of good memories of the last 10 or more years of reading, watching and even playing Harry Potter games. All those familiar environments, gone into history and memory.

I distinctly remember when Potter mania began in the late 90’s. I made a promise to myself that I would hold out and not read any Potter books because they seemed so juvenile. But one summer uni holiday (1st year) I was so bored I turned to the 3rd book and started reading. Only because a friend of mine had lent it to me, and I had nothing else on. It really pulled me in from the beginning. That’s one promise I was happy to break. And of course I remember Bao saying in 2001 how hot Emma Watson was. At the time I believe she was 12 or something. Something disturbing about that. But she turned out to be indeed hot. :p

It’s gotten to a point now that I am getting more and more tired and unmotivated. Even to post on this great Ultimate Sigh blog. For a while now I’ve been meaning to post something on my recent Mageia transition from Mandriva 2010.2. But I just can’t be bothered. Instead I attempted to get Legion TD going over a Hamachi network so I can LAN play with Ngai.

What started off as potentially a quick game of LAN at 8 didn’t see us playing until 1130, a full 3.5hours later that night. It all stemmed from the fact that I didn’t have legitimate keys to play on Battle.net, but still wanted to multiplayer with Ngai. After changing network configurations, turning off firewalls, Ngai reinstalling War 3, Frozen Throne and patches in his Windows partition, we still didn’t get it working. I had to get a cd key changer and use someone else’s keys to go on Bnet. But even then we couldn’t get into a game with each other until Ngai fiddled around with port forwarding. All this just to play 30minutes of the game before my wireless got cut for a while. It’s a sigh even though we were trying to be sigh free.

duke

I really thought it would actually be released like they said it would this time around. But the longest in development game is still in development. At least the video announcing the delay is kind of funny.

Perhaps when nuclear fusion is solved, man has colonised the stars and the universe is facing heat death, maybe then, Duke will finally be released.

So long time between updates. And why? Because of work! What a massive sigh! I’ve been working late everyday and coming home pretty buggered to post anything, or to even fix the forum’s broken CSS after I upgraded the PHP versions. I’m about to go RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Another thing is that I’ve been reading the Song of Fire and Ice books from George R R Martin.

book cover
I’m currently on book 2: A Clash of Kings. The whole series to now is very good. One of the best fantasy series I’ve read in many a year so far. But something troubles me. And that’s the prospect of doing a Jordan.

Basically for those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to starting a book series very well and powerfully, then when it appears that the series is popular, drag out the series by writing fluff upon fluff and / or writing huge amounts on side characters that really can be cut, all to lengthen the time period by which one can milk the cashcow of your popular series. Song of Fire and Ice was initially meant to be 3 books, then 5 books, and now it’s been pushed to 7 books. Worse still, here are the publication dates:

Book Pages Release
A Game of Thrones 694 August 1996
A Clash of Kings 768 November 1998
A Storm of Swords 973 August 2000
A Feast for Crows 753 October 2005
A Dance with Dragons Unknown Expected July 2011
The Winds of Winter Unknown Unknown
A Dream of Spring Unknown Unknown

My concern is that his books are getting further and further in between, and he’s added more books to his series, which means it’s quite likely it won’t be done for maybe 10+ years to come. That is a long time to be waiting for the story to finish. By the time I finish all the books that have been released (or are about to be released soon), it’ll still probably be a few years before new books in the series are finished. So I’ll probably need to re-read some books just to remember what the fuck happened before. Assuming of course the author doesn’t die before he’s finished, a likely possibility given that he’s fairly old already and he’s quite fat. So even something good will probably lead to a sigh. 🙁

Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) has a firm release date of May 3, 2011. Yes that’s right, I may finally get to play this rather than wait for the heat death of the universe.

The trailer looks awesome, this is definitely anti-sigh!

Unless of course, it doesn’t happen yet again.
