So I am back from South (side) Korea.

I had a metric bucketload of fun. Highlights were:

  • Hanging out with my old buddy from Tsinghua days

It was a pretty fun time drinking it up and just chilling with Chang again. Talked about old times, stupid antics that we got up to, you know basically reminiscing about the slacker days of being a international student in Beijing.

Drinking culture in Sth Korea is pretty fun and cool when you are a student. All fancy free with a huge array of options for fun, entertainment and above all convenience. It probably gets a whole lot less fun after the student part of your life though, as I hear adult life for a male is pretty stressful.

  • Seeing the pretty scenery of South Korea in Spring

We hiked quite a bit and Spring, whilst cold in South Korea, does provide some nice scenery. In particular, the cherry blossoms which are well, blooming during that time. We checked out the famous Seoraksan National Park along with some other nature preserves. There are many sites still not yet visited and definitely worthy of a return sometime, especially Jeju.

  • Gong to the DMZ

Salsa will probably want to talk more about this, but the DMZ tour was definitely something that was hugely interesting. From seeing the ROK soldiers, to US marines, to glimpsing Nth Korean buildings and people, the whole setup is steeped in intrigue and lost opportunities. Which of course why Salsa is even more interested in Nth Korea, even buying up a few notes of their currency which is currently trading at 1 AUD to 146 Nth Korean Won (if you can somehow buy it).

  • Eating

This one is pretty self explanatory. Food is a massive part of Korean day to day life. It seems from a casual observer’s point of view that they are always eating. Yet I did not see any fat people. Most of the dishes are communal, like BBQ and big plates of chicken in stew similar to the Chinese dish ???. All in all a lot of their dishes are very much geared towards being good with drinks and alcohol, like their version of Izakuya.

  • Jeju

Jeju is a volcanic island in the south of Sth Korea. The whole island is basically a tourist attraction with loads of things to see and do. In the middle is Hallasan which is a massive volcano with a huge crater at the tip. But the area is also known as a honeymoon destination for Sth Koreans (and the Hawaii of Sth Korea). It is a massive place and we only scratched the surface (although Salsa erroneously thought we could cycle everywhere). It’s very pretty and definitely worth a repeat visit, this time more cycling and leasing a car to drive around to all the places we missed. We also had an ocean view room. 🙂

All in all, a good time and a great place to visit.

So back from Korea and what a contrast between public transport systems. I missed my train this morning because it took 15mins to buy a ticket.  The queue was that long. Cause? Shitty slow arse payment methods. Only 1 ticket booth and 1 machine. The machine basically just accepts cash but only gives 19.90 change max. The majority of people need to use a cc to pay so they goto counter. These cc need to be swiped, reswiped, and signed or pinned. What about contactless tech at both booth and machine? What about more machines? All this wouldn’t be that much of a problem if peak hr service didn’t come every 20 mins only. WTF is that? And the fare increased too. 🙁

Liverpool dew in the 102nd minute. 1-1 to Arsenal. Even though Arsenal scored a penalty after the 90th minute already. Let’s all laugh at Arsenal and how crap they are. Even though Liverpool had two youth team full backs in their defense.

This post is a long time coming. But I just haven’t had the time to write about it.

Last month I made a return to Fort St, for a friendly kickabout. It’s the first time I’ve been there in 10+ years. God that makes me sound old. As you can see, a lot of the old school grounds look pretty much the same as before, just with more construction stuff around.

The “New” Kilgour area

The field itself is still as crap as ever. I almost twisted my ankle on the first run since I had forgotten all about the many potholes that lie underneath the overgrown unmowed lawn. The ball would bop up strangely and randomly. Ahhh…brings a tear to the eye.

We ended up playing on the old sandy tennis courts, where strangely there was a thin piece of almost undetectable string in the middle of the court serving, presumably, as the net. So we had to play on the top court instead. The walls are higher but the grounds are just as dodgey, the grass just as messy, and Leondios and a few other teachers are still there.

It was the best of the times, it was the worst of times…In short: the school still looks shitty, but it still brings back good memories. And the students there are still just as awesomely funny. On one of the new high fences I saw the words “Pedestrians area” crossed out and made to read “Pedos area”. Classic.

This is a long delayed post about my and Salsa’s walk around the Pacific coast, in this national park I’ve forgotten the name of. Anyway, it was very pleasant and the scenery was pretty stunning.

SIGH! I haven’t been able to access any web pages for the last day and a half. I found out I could still ping IP addresses though (and Ultimate Sigh is still online). So it seemed to be a DNS issue with TPG. I called them and they were of not much help. Basically told me to reset the modem (which I had) and reset my computer. Then they said all they can do is charge me for a technician to come out if it still doesn’t clear up.

Fuck that. I put in Google’s DNS (8.8.8.8) and I can resolve host names again. Basically TPG fail!!! I think if I had stuck with their support suggestions, I wouldn’t be surfing web pages until next week or even later if I had to pay for a technician to come out, even though I don’t think the problem is with my line.

SIGH! The world is full of SIGHS.

So I have daily super early morning meetings to provide progress updates on this super shitty dumb project I’m working on.

These meetings started yesterday and are set to go on for a couple of months until the current phase of the project is over. What does my exec, and delivery manager, do? He fucking hasn’t shown up yet to these meetings. Both yesterday and today me and this other bloke show up early morning. But the manager doesn’t show, doesn’t give us any warning that he’s not going to make it. On both days now, we’ve had to reschedule the meeting to after 9. If I had known that I wouldn’t have gotten in super frigging early.

The manager says he’ll make it super early tomorrow for the morning meeting. But sigh, so far I’ve gotten up super early for nothing. He better come on time tomorrow, otherwise I’m going to move for a reschedule of this stupid daily meeting.

Ultimate Sigh has ads now, to your right. So remember to disable your ad filter (they are only text ads) and click on them if you will. Every cent goes towards keeping this PC on, so you can enjoy the sighs.

duke

I really thought it would actually be released like they said it would this time around. But the longest in development game is still in development. At least the video announcing the delay is kind of funny.

Perhaps when nuclear fusion is solved, man has colonised the stars and the universe is facing heat death, maybe then, Duke will finally be released.
