This is what I posted on a friend’s Facebook wall:

mate, i had a dream last night about installing a linux distro on a piece of crap laptop with all sorts of exotic hardware. and then you were there, and russ was there too and she said you bought her a laptop with oem ubuntu and it ran cleanly. i then played with unity and you guys said it was just like a normal window manager.

I miss being able to mess around with Linux.

So after using up a shitload of Lavaspot (Wi-Max) credits, I have finally finished downloading a few hundred megabytes of patches for Starcraft2 which was required for me to login into Battlenet with it. That login finally allowed me to authenticate the game so I can play in OFFLINE mode. This right here is what’s wrong with DRM. I bought the game legitimately but have not been able to play it on my laptop in Samoa until now. A big Fuck off to you Blizzard.

So as most people know, I love chicken laksa, well really, I love the chicken laksa from Malay Chinese on Hunter St in Sydney. I love it so much and miss it so much here in Apia that I went searching for pictures of it. The Malay Chinese website itself doesn’t really have any large photos of the laksa I like (the chicken not boneless chicken). So I’m going to link to some other guy’s photo I found on the net of the same laksa at the same restaurant.

Malay Chinese Chicken Laksa

When I get back to Sydney, I’m going to eat so much of that. I used to have it up to 3 times every 2 weeks. I would have had more if a certain person didn’t ban me from eating there more often. That and I also miss:

  • Shancheng Hotpot
    Shancheng Hotpot
  • Pho
    Pho

So what do I eat here? Well there’s not much variety and the food ain’t the best here. There’s the local favourite, Pinatis of course.
pinatis
That picture is from some Peace Corps blog, who happens to be in Samoa now as well. I used to eat here a fair bit, chopsuey, chow mein and rice for a low, low 4 tala price (<$2AUD).

But you get sick of the same food all the time. I actually found a pretty good fast Asian food place called Deng Sheng which is close to where I work. I eat here quite frequently now. It’s actually decent with a good Soya chicken. A meal with drink costs 9.50 tala (<$5). So I can't complain about the price either.

Recently though, I have taken to going to Nella’s.
nella
This is a Jamaican fast food chain. Fuck, the fried chicken there is delicious. It is better than KFC. :O
I know it’s a shock, but it’s true. The 2 piece chicken meal with fries and a can of coke costs 12.90 tala, so it’s the priciest of the options, but well worth a treat sometimes. The fries are also delicious with awesome (chicken) salt. This Nella’s thing could be really big! They don’t have a website but they do have a facebook page. Check them out.

I wanted to fire up my Starcraft2 game last night to play it. But NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! the game wouldn’t start because I needed to connect to the internet to verify my copy. WTF?!!!! You know why I wanted offline single player mode Blizzard? Because I don’t have an internet connection. Sigh!

So I played a round of Legion TD with that Nature race and I was shit. Haven’t played it for so long. Only got up to level 18 or 19.

Not much is going on in sunny and hot Samoa, besides slight anxiousness about the start of the soccer season here. I also had a dream about being able to download 10 torrents simultaneously at good speed at home…pretty much shows you how much I miss always on, fast, and cheap internet.

One other thing that I’m missing is playing around with Linux Distros that interest me. Here’s one that I’ve been wanting to check out: Bodhi. Also available are some screenshots.

Whilst I love and use Mandriva / Mageia, I’m very interested in this distro, despite it being based on Ubuntu. Why? Well, it aims to be a lot leaner than Ubuntu and it’s based around the E17 desktop environment. I’ve tried playing around E17 (Enlightenment17) in Mandriva, but have found their packages to be quite buggy, incomplete and generally lacking polish. I think that’s pretty much the case with E17 in most major distros. However the Bodhi guys have apparently polished E17 integration and incorporate any upstream improvements and fixes very quickly. I have loaded up a live cd in a Virtual Box environment, and it feels fast. But I really need the internet to get it to anything interesting, as out of the box it is very spartan without many of the programs I would like to use. What would be ideal is to chuck this on an old machine to play around with, see how it handles older hardware, maybe give it an extra lease on life. I know Arch Linux did wonders for my old 2005 Dell Laptop…but I lack my old PCs / laptops and the internet here in Samoa. 🙁

Yep, haven’t updated in a while. Mainly because the only internet is at work and it’s a little awkward posting on one’s blog in a cramped space.

But for those who want to see some pics, they are all here, in my gallery.

Other than that, Salsa is here and I’m training with the Samoan Premier League guys and may make their team when the season starts. Yes, that’s right, I could be playing in the top flight.

I haven’t been making frequent or even worthy updates recently.

It’s because I have been sigh sick again. This time it has meant that I missed the biggest party of the year in Samoa so far (the After Party event). I even got multiple txts from my workmates telling me that I should come out despite the fever and bad stomach because it was not to be missed. 🙁

But Sal comes soon. 🙂 Woot.
